Steven Carrelli is a visual artist and writer living in Chicago. His paintings
and drawings have been exhibited widely in the United States in solo
and group exhibitions, and they have appeared in regional and national
publications. He teaches at DePaul University in the Department of Art,
Media and Design.
A few words about the poem:
“Among the Living” was inspired by the memory of the sudden illness and death of
a great and very dear friend, Marshall Patner (1931-2000). Written 15 years after his
death, it is a testament to the vitality of his presence, which continues to be startlingly
great. I count him among the living.
